Letter from NRCS Chief, Arlen Lancaster

November 7, 2006

Subject: American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month

To: All NRCS Employees

November marks the observance of National American Indian Heritage Month. The 2006 Natural Resources Conservation Service poster entitled "The Gifts of Mother Earth," reflects the close ties that the Poarch Band of Creek Indians has with the land and waterways. The artist, Lori Sawyer, a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Atmore, Alabama.

National American Indian Heritage Month is celebrated to recognize intertribal cultures and to  educate the public about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of American Indians and Alaska  Natives. National American Indian Heritage Month also enhances our efforts to honor tribal sovereignty by working on a government-to-government basis with American Indians and Alaska Natives. We honor the rights of Indian tribes, and work to protect and enhance tribal resources.

Please join me in supporting those activities taking place around the Nation in commemoration of National American Indian Heritage Month. If you would we further information, please contact your State American Indian/Alaska Native Emphasis Program Manager, or Mr. Gerald Rouse, National American Indian/Alaska Native Emphasis Program Manager, at (509) 323-2974.
