Information for Web Authors
Preparation
- Have FrontPage software installed on your computer.
- Read the NRCS Web Design Style Guide. Copies are available from Public
Affairs, or on the Web
Handbook website. You will need to enter your eAuthentication ID and
password to access this site. Other useful information and tutorials are
available here, as well.
- Organize. Together with the Content Manager, decide how new pages will
fit into the navigational structure of your existing subweb. Look at the
national NRCS website to determine what information you can provide as
hyperlinks, rather than as pages on the Montana site. Look at the new
content and decide how many pages you will need and how they will be
navigated. Create new folders if necessary. Decide on a title for each page.
If there is a great deal of new information, it may help to draw out a site
map.
Working on the Development Server
- Access your subweb through FrontPage, and use FrontPage to work on
the site.
- The URL for the development server is
https://web-dev.sc.egov.usda.gov/MT/insert your subweb here/.
Login: XeGov\eAuthenticationID (same as for your time sheet)
Password: Your eAuthentication Password (same as for your time sheet)
- If you have problems, questions, or need help completing a project, ask
the Webmaster (Mary Myers) for assistance.
- More information on the style guide, HTML, FrontPage, accessibility
issues, and where to go for help is available on the
Web Handbook
website.
Publishing
- When your new page or pages are ready, have the Webmaster publish them to the review server. It is your responsibility to ensure pages
are accessible and meet style guide requirements before having them
published for review. The Webmaster will spot check accessibility and style
when publishing. You may need to revise some pages before they can be
published.
- Have the appropriate Content Manager review the new content on the
review server. It is the responsibility of the Content Manager to review and
approve content before it is published to the next level. You may need to
redo the content one or more times before the pages are approved. Forward or
carbon copy the approval you receive from the Content Manager to the
Webmaster.
- Once approval has been received, and both Section 508 (accessibility)
and style requirements have been met, the Webmaster will publish to the
production server (web-prod), and the pages will become live.
Maintenance
At least once a month, review your subweb in a browser. You will receive a
reminder about this on the 15th of every month.
- Check for and correct broken internal and external links. Have the
Webmaster republish changed pages.
- Update or remove any outdated content. Notify the Webmaster to remove
these files from web-review and web-prod as well.
