MONTANA VOLUNTEER RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

Bozeman -- During National Volunteer Week 2008, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recognized Kayla Higgins for her outstanding service as an Earth Team volunteer.

Kayla Higgins at the Jordan Field Office FAX machine.Kayla Higgins received the 2007 National Earth Team Individual Award in a ceremony at the USDA field office in Jordan, Montana. She was recognized for her assistance in helping manage the USDA field office in Jordan by completing office tasks, greeting customers, and developing conservation plan maps.

"Kayla's efforts saved NRCS employees' time and provided quality products to NRCS customers," said Dave White, State Conservationist, who presented Kayla with the national award. "She is an important member of the Jordan field office team."

Kayla volunteered even though she has Osteogenesis imperfecta or brittle-bone disease. Kayla is 2 feet 6 inches tall and moves around in an electric chair. She is very mobile, great on the computer, and quick with a keyboard and mouse.

Kayla encourages others to volunteer through the Earth Team Program. "It's been a great experience for me. Completing the work I have accomplished for the NRCS feels really good because I know I'm helping others."

The Earth Team Volunteer Program is part of the NRCS, the federal government's lead agency for conserving natural resources on private lands. Everyone who serves on the Earth Team plays an important role in keeping NRCS's long-standing commitment to working with people to protect and conserve natural resources.
