Methods for Measuring Applied Water

Method 1

After watering for two hours, use a spade or shovel to check the depth of the moist soil. Water will redistribute to approximately two times this depth of wetting after 24 hours if the initial application rate was sufficient to saturate the soil.

Method 2

When using a sprinkler, place coffee cans in several locations in the watered area. Note that the sprinkler must give consistent coverage, or some areas may be water stressed. Check the time required to fill the can 1 inch deep with water. With this, calculate the time required to apply 2.5 inches, and you will know when to move the sprinkler or turn it off. The length of time varies with water pressure.
