Digital Record Book: A Tool for Montana's Farmers and Ranchers

Introduction

With partial sponsorship from the Montana Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative and the work of the Montana Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS), with Emily Goldberg as the lead, this project was completed.

Objectives

A record keeping book has been developed to provide Montana producers an additional tool for tracking and updating their production records. This project was intended to directly benefit Montana farmers and ranchers statewide through improvement of their record keeping skills and observations, and thus an improvement in management of the state’s agricultural lands and natural resources.

Methods

The record book is in a CD format, which allows the users to download and use the portions of the record book that are needed. Farmers and ranchers can tailor the record book to fit their needs. The digital record book includes an introduction and some reference materials as well as printable forms or Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for Cropland Records, Farmstead Records, Irrigation Records, Pest and Nutrient Records, Management Records, Range Records.

Results

Initially 500 CDs were printed and over 400 of those have been distributed to farmers and ranchers across the state.
